Birthdays..Times Two!

My dear darling children are born two years, six days apart: Caleb on February 12, Sarah on February 18.  Over the past six years, we have established a tradition of celebrating.  They each pick a birthday dessert to have on their big day, whether it be a cake or something else, and then we do something special as a combination celebration for both of them.

This year, Caleb turned eight!  I can't believe my baby is eight!

Caleb chose root beer floats for his birthday sweet.

A couple weeks before his birthday, we had a calf get lost from his mama.  Like, very lost.  Like, he wandered far far away, under the fence, completely out of the pasture, we couldn't find him for a day....lost.  Thankfully, we did finally find him though.  He was just old enough to be fast enough that Josh had trouble catching him to return him to the right pasture.  Thus leading to the brilliant idea of   **insert dramatic music**  getting Caleb a lasso for his birthday.  Something that is fun, but also actually (hopefully) will be useful someday.  He was thrilled!  He's been practicing in the house for now, but when the weather warms up, we'll take it outside to stay.  He's already pretty good.  Of course, his targets aren't moving... except for Sarah.  Sometimes she becomes his victim... er,  I mean target.

Am I a bad mother for sentencing my son to a life of duties for his birthday?  He'll forever be the lasso-er now.  In thirty years, he'll still be the one called when we need an uncooperative cow or a sick calf  caught.  All because of his eighth birthday gift. A little part of me feels bad.  But not bad enough that I went ahead and gave it to him anyway.  He's a mini-cowboy. He likes it.  Or at least he'll learn to like it... getting necessities as gifts, that is.

We also gave him a movie about dinosaurs.  So it's all good.

And Sarah turned six!  It's just as hard to believe that my Sweet Sarah Rose is six already!

Our Princess chose banana splits for her birthday sweet.  Complete with three flavors of  ice cream, chocolate syrup, caramel, whipped cream, cherries and of course, the banana.  Sarah isn't a whipped cream kinda girl.  So she had hers whipped cream-less.  But I wished I'd gotten a picture of the others WITH whipped cream because they were totally magazine cover worthy!  They looked amazing!

Sarah received a real cowgirl hat and a wooden craft project.
She also received a movie.
About Barbies.
That I try to avoid watching at all cost.
The one time was one time too many.
I'm saving detail cleaning the toilet with a toothbrush for the next time she wants to watch it.
"Oh, I'm sorry Honey.  I've got toilets to clean with a toothbrush.  But you go ahead and watch Barbie without me."
Not really.  But pretty darn close!

And for their celebration, we went bowling!  They had never been bowling before, so they were super excited!  We were supposed to go last year, but between a snowstorm, frigid temperatures and a cow having trouble calving on the same night that the birthday bowling bash was scheduled, it got canceled. And we just never got around to rescheduling it.  So suffice it to say that a year's worth of anticipation made the night even more fun!

I have to add that I have the most understanding kids I've ever met.  And I've had a lot of children in my life between teaching, church ministries, volunteering projects and working in daycares.  We had to reschedule bowling twice before finally making it on the third try this year.  And each time, they were cool with it.  They understand that with livestock and weather, plans change... and change often without much warning.  In fact, we almost didn't make it that third try either due to a heifer calving.  But she finally popped that baby out and we were on our way...only one year, two weeks and an hour delayed!

Now, on to bowling....

Josh was thoughtful enough to get a couple of quick pictures on his phone, for which I am thankful. They're not the best because it's hard to get action pictures of kids, but it's a memory captured nonetheless!

"How'd I do?  How'd I do?"
Poor Sarah thought that when we went bowling, we would each get one turn and then we would be done.  Much to her great surprise, we each got many more than one turn!  We played two games, so I explained she'd get FORTY turns!  She was thrilled.  Until she got a strike and she realized that she got one less turn than Caleb.

But she thoroughly enjoyed all the thirty-nine turns that she had!

This was one of only a couple times Caleb used the ramp.  All the other times, he ran up to the lane carrying his ball and winged that bad boy as far as he could!  He would get his ball from the ball return, give us a look, and then without even really looking where he was going, he'd turn and run run run, swing back,  throw 'er down the lane and hope for the best.  It was hilarious!  But he had a great time!

All in all, we had a great birthday month!  We are blessed.

By the way, Josh won one round and I won the other.  I would have won both, but the lane gate (or whatever it's called) malfunctioned on one of my turns in the first game.  It came down when my ball was halfway down the lane.  The ball hit the gate and bounced backwards back towards me.  Then came to a complete stop halfway down the land. And my turn was over. Embarrassingly, I had to go get the dude at the desk to get my ball. He laughed at me.  I almost cried.  I'm lying about crying, but it was kinda embarrassing.  I'm sure that turn would have been the strike that would have made me victorious.

Josh, you are hereby challenged to a rematch... on a lane that works on all my turns!
