The city of Eddyville was awarded a grant to put towards purchasing 50 trees that were to be planted around the city of Eddyville. Part of the agreement of the grant was that youngsters were to be part of the planting and provided with continuing education about trees. So, bright and early on a VERY chilly and kinda wet September 13th, the kids and I showed up in Eddyville with shovels in hand ready to plant! We listened through a DNR representative teaching us how to plant and then we were set free to do out thang!
We were designated a couple of trees in the Eddyville park, just east of the bandstand, to plant. The tree Sarah claimed as hers was (I think) a Red Oak and the tree that Caleb claimed as his was a Black Gum. I think it's fantastic that the kids will be able to go to the park and see the tree that they planted. They are already looking forward to next summer when there's a bit of shade and we can picnic under them. The neat thing is, their trees are right beside each other SO when we do go on picnics, we can picnic under BOTH trees at the SAME time! And the kids can grow up watching their trees get bigger and bigger and maybe even someday take their kiddos on picnics under the trees.... or maybe, better yet, I'll take my grandkids on picnics under the trees their parents planted.
I love dreaming of the future :-)
