For the past few weeks, Josh had heard ads on radio promoting Lucas County's bale art contest. Those who chose to designed creations out a hay bales in hopes of winning first place. Their locations were marked on a map of Lucas County for viewers to drive around, find and then vote for their favorite one at designated polls. In honor of his birthday, Josh chose to do the bale hunt after church Sunday. After a bite to eat, we headed south towards Chariton to find what we could find...

This is the map with the locations of the bales marked. There were many to find, though we focused mainly on the ones close to Chariton; we didn't go way out into the country to find the far away ones. |

The very first one we found was the monster truck! I don't think the kids really understood what we were going to do until we found this one. I'm pretty sure they were thinking "we can see hay bales at home... this driving around to find some is boring!" Caleb is a huge monster truck fan, so finding this one first was perfect to enlighten them to our mission and pump up their enthusiasm! |

A puppy.
He did have two eyes, one was just laying beside his paw. Poor thing! |
A can of mixed nuts. |
A wiener dog! This one was pretty cool, too! |
An angel. Like the puppy, this angel also had two eyes, but the second one was MIA. |
A scary spider. |
I think this one was the family's favorite. It was of a boy fishing with his dog. |
I've seen these characters around. I have no idea what they are. Someone feel free to tell me exactly what these creatures are. |
The M&M dudes! |
The one we found on the way home. Not sure exactly what this one was either, but it was done well! |
These pictures aren't all of the ones we found. Some of the ones we saw were neat, but we weren't able to slow down or pull over for a picture. A couple were just, well... lame. But we had a great time! Another memory in the birthday celebration book. On the way home, we thought about what kind of creation we would do if we were to do one. Don't be surprised if next year you see a bale creation in the Van Zante yard!
