**This is an excellent spot to insert the reminder that our words are mighty powerful, as scripture after scripture teaches us! I try to carefully guard my words, especially around my kids, but every once in a while, something will "spill" out. Thankfully, this spill was okay and turned out to actually be a teaching moment about praying in faith, but was a reminder to myself to think before I speak!**
One morning, Sarah and I sat down in our usual spots to do her hair: I sit on our glider and she sits on the footrest in front of it. Perfect height differences for us to both be comfortable. Sarah gets her hair done almost everyday... and by "done", I mean it's usually either Dutch or French braided pigtails. It keeps her hair tangle free, clean, and helps guard her head from ticks when we're outside. (Kinda gross, but I'll see the tick trying to work through the tight braid before it can get through and I can pluck it off right away. Anyway...) Although she doesn't like to, she sits patiently enough while I do it. I'm a fast braider and it doesn't take but just a few minutes to put her braids in. Her patience, though, is sometimes replaced with complaints of not wanting it done and ponderings of "is this gonna take very long?". This particular morning, I was running short on patience myself (hence the spillage of words!) and upon hearing her ask this for who knows what 'enth' time, I simply answered...
"Yes, Sarah. It is going to take some time. I didn't spend years and years praying for a little girl with beautiful long blond hair just so you can run around all day everyday tangling it up!"
You can be assured that every time I see Sarah's hair, I'm reminded of this answer to prayer! She didn't take after either Josh or I as far as hair goes. Ours both is SUPER thick, while Sarah's is perfect... not too thin, not too thick. Ours both is super dark, while Sarah's is obviously not! And while I have no idea what Josh's hair looks like long, I do know that mine is wavy, course and just not very pretty unless I take a while to straighten it (usually only on Sundays and special occasions!). So Sarah's beautiful long blond hair is definitely, without a doubt, an answer to those prayers I asked for all those years.
What a super reminder to me and an excellent teaching moment for the kids to tell them about how God answers even our simplest desires!
Even though she doesn't always want to sit for it, she's always happy to have pretty hair when it's done! |
