Adventures with French Toast

Friday night, I got the request for French Toast for supper.  Who knew French Toast could be so entertaining?!

The kids have had French Toast before, maybe once or twice, but we don't have it often and they didn't remember ever eating it before.  When we do have it, I make real French Toast with homemade bread soaked in a sweet custard and baked warm and toasty in the oven versus the typical American version of store-bought loaf/sandwich bread slathered in egg and fried in butter... not that anything's wrong with the latter version, but the first version is just so much yummier (and thanks to Google, a recipe is always handy!).  Anyway, a last minute request meant that the quicker American version was opted for and the kids, especially Sarah, were quite the entertainment for the duration of our simple little supper.

Here are Sarah Rose's step by step instructions on how to learn to eat American French Toast:

Step 1:  Taste the syrup and then dig in!

Step 2:  "What's this?!"   Reaffirm with Daddy what exactly it is that is being eaten.
(By the way, if you've never heard Sarah's "what's this?!?!", you're missing out... its cute enough to make the grumpiest grump break a smile!)

Step 3:  Dig in again... but this time with both hands!

Step 4:  Make sure everyone knows you have a knife by flashing it in the air.

Step 5:  Realize your hunger and dig in... again.

Step 6:  Add a little elbow grease.  Teach that toast who's boss and declare to it that you WILL be the winner in the end and the toast WILL end up in your tummy!

And when it gets to the point of frustration....
Step 7: .... laugh at Daddy pretending to drink the syrup.

Step 8:  After a refreshing burst of laughter at Daddy's silly antics, rejoice in the fact that you're about to overcome the French Toast.

Step 9:  If fork and knife fail, use hands and enjoy!
It took Sarah twenty minutes to eat one piece of toast.  And yes, I did offer to cut it for her.  However, Sarah is very independent and insist on doing everything herself.  But she had enough and I think she enjoyed every minute of it!
