Friday, May 22, was our last day of school. The kids were ecstatic! Sarah had technically been done with all her first grade books for a few weeks. However, I found her some work to do of various sorts to keep her busy learning until Caleb finished up his all his work. Caleb could not wait to be finished! When we were getting down to the wire, he put in double time to finish up by that Friday so he'd be done.... so he could stay outside and farm all day with the men and not have to come back in after chores every morning to do school work. He definitely takes after his daddy, whom I have been told story after story of how he didn't care for school either because it took him away from being outside farming!

The last test in the last subject of his third grade year. When he's done with this one, he's done for the year! Can you tell he's smiling?! |

As soon as Caleb gave me his test, both kids tore out the front door and ran across the yard in celebration of the beginning of summer break. The little stinkers! |
I've been asked more times than I can count about whether or not we do school in the summer. The answer is.... it depends. Our first summer break, we took about six weeks off and then, because it so very very hot, we started back up in July because it was nice and cool inside where we could do lessons when it was too blazing hot outside to do anything comfortably. Then we took a fall break during harvest instead. Last year was a BEAUTIFUL summer, so we spent most of our time outside doing outside things and no time inside doing lessons. This year I've got some "extra" projects I'd like to do, maybe on hot or rainy days. But we'll see what happens. Maybe we will, maybe we won't. Every year is different.
And after all, kids have got to have time to be kids! And what better time to do that than summer!?
