Well, sure Honey. I can do that.
So we (us farm wives) cook up lunch ('cause we want our Honeys to have a hot lunch that will last them until whenever they decide to come in at the end of the day to eat supper; for us Van Zante adults, we've been known to eat supper as late as 10:00 during the busy season), pack up lunch, get the kids changed to work/outside clothes, put on a bra (wait... what? did I say that out loud?), pack up the car with kids and food, hunt down the farm to find Honey's location, unpack the car, serve up the food, spend 20 minutes fussing at the kids to eat their food - they can play when they're done, clean up the food, pack the car back up, drive home, unpack car, get food and kids back in house, change kids back to house clothes, get kids washed up from the dust plastered on them from the field, unpack food, clean up packing mess, clean up kitchen, put everything away, and quite possible take the bra back off (wait...what? did I say that out loud again?!)...
...because it's so much simpler and easier for lunch to be delivered than to have to drive the tractor "all the way" home.
But I don't mind. Really I don't. It breaks up the day and I do enjoy helping My Honey out however I can. And if it's going through the struggle to cook, pack and deliver a hot lunch to get him through his afternoon and continued in the field, well... I can do that.
Today, we got our first random call. And the first meal of the year "eaten in the field" was actually eaten in the car because this mama didn't feel like fighting the wind.
On the menu: pretty well all-you-can-eat taco salad. One head of lettuce, a pound and a half of ground beef, a big can of beans, and all the goodies (olives, peppers, onions, etc.) added in and all I had left was about half a cup of salad. When my family eats, they EAT!
Too windy outside, so eating in the back seat. The kids loved it. Something about being a kid that gifts them with the ability to find joy in the simple things! |
This kid eats as much as I do.... and more if it's something he REALLY likes! |
