Each year, the Eddyville Public Library puts on a Summer Reading Program for kids starting at age three. We try to go to the library on a regular basis, so my kids are pretty familiar with the library setup. They don't need anything extra to make a trip to the library exciting, but having the reading program going on does put a special twist on the trip.
The Reading Program is great. It consists of contests, prizes and story times held at the library. The main contests this year is a scavenger hunt through the town of Eddyville (which you'll more and likely be seeing pictures of later on a future post once we've done it), a trivia contest on the town of Eddyville and keeping reading logs for prizes. During story time, the kids get a story, do a craft and walk out with an armful of take home stuff to do!

Mrs. Vicki, the librarian, reading the kids a story. The theme this year is "community". I have to chuckle with pride at Caleb. Last year, he wouldn't participate at all unless I was sitting right there with him and then he just sat there staring at the floor; THIS year, he is the kid offering extra information and having to be "shhh'ed". Its amazing how much kids develop and change over the course of a year! |

After story time, the kids get to do a craft. This week's craft was a series of stick puppets with different community helpers on them. There were extra spaces available, so even though Sarah is not three yet, she got to sign up and participate! |

Caleb working hard on his puppets, with helper Jillian (I think that's her name?) looking on. |

After the Reading Program, we went through our regular library routine. The kids each get to pick out five books and one movie, take their selections to the front desk and after the books and movies are checked out, the librarian offers them the treasure chest. The treasure chest is a big hit because its filled with treats the kids can choose from when they check out a book. |

I thought it would be a neat picture to have the kids show their books and Reading Program stuff while sitting on the library bench. That's not too much for a Bloggin' Mama to ask for, is it? Apparently, it was. So I forgot about all the props and settled for these half-smiles. Its a memory, at least :-) |
