Independance Day Night

This year was the kids' first trip to see the Fourth of July fireworks.  Daddy surprised us with the trip after finishing earlier than expected for the day mowing and chopping oats.  And we were treated to ice cream, too!  We tried Graham's (the local ice cream place), but the line was super long so we settled with sharing two Burger King milk shakes instead.

Bedtime.  Yeppers, this was about 8:00 Monday night, the time the kids are usually either in bed or in the middle of our bedtime routine.  Instead, we're outside practicing for the bumper-to-bumper traffic that the fireworks were sure to bring.

Caleb was very excited to experience his first fireworks.  Here he and Sarah are, anxiously awaiting the start of the show.

Our choice seats?  The K Mart parking lot!  Gotta love it.

And gobbling up the ice cream.

Until the fireworks started.  We thought Sarah would be the one who would be startled, but with the very first boom it was Caleb with his face hidden in my neck, asking if we could go home yet.

And Sarah Rose was the one who was awed by them!

Caleb finished the evening with hiding his eyes in Daddy's shirt....

...while Sarah Rose finished the evening by finishing the ice cream!
And practicing the bumper-to-bumper traffic would have been a good idea had they been the ones driving. It was a little crazy getting out of town, but we managed to do so in good time.  However, we were stopped by a train for twenty minutes on the way home, so it made for a rather late night.  Caleb fell asleep within five minutes of being on the road, but Sarah chatted with us the whole time.  I think she has her Mama's late night genes :-)
