A Friday Afternoon of Gardening Fun

We decided that the soil had finally warmed up enough to plant some of the garden Friday afternoon.  Some of early garden stuff is a little bit late this year due to the cold, wet weather but still in in time to grow plenty of yummies.  But I've got a theory:  seed only grows in certain conditions and there's no point putting out seed when you don't have those conditions; it just sits in the cold, wet dirt and either rots or deteriorates and doesn't produce near as good. So we ignore the date on the calendar and go by the weather - when it warms up we plant and the seed just takes right off!  Better late than never (or all your seed wasted and having to buy more and replant!), so we got out our onion sets, lettuce, carrots and spinach and went to work.

It was wonderful that Josh was able to help me!  Especially when it came to untangling the twine that we were going to use as markers.

Big Brother Caleb showing Little Sister Sarah Rose how its done!

Caleb was a big help with planting the onions... for about the first ten.  Then he found better things to do...

...like finding and playing with worms.  The cup that held his onion sets magically transformed to a worm's comfy abode in no time.  He was a little hesitant at first to hold the first worm of the year, but Mommy showed him how it was done and after that he was fine.

Sarah loves her hats.  Anytime she goes out, she's gotta have one on, which makes leaving for church on Sunday mornings very interesting trying to convince her that she doesn't need a hat for church.  Anyway, she was helpful for a few more onion sets than Caleb was before moving on to "funner" things...

...like making the rows with Daddy for the next seeds.  She thought she was a big girl when Daddy let her help with the hoe!
And then the camera was put away.  The wind was picking up and it was getting chilly, so I opted to speed up the planting process over taking more pictures.  After we finished planting and cleaning up our mess, we went inside to get cleaned up for supper and bedtime.

The new bathtub toy: a suction cup hoop and little basketball Caleb got in his Easter basket.  Sarah's taking a shot here.

And then a terrific look of "Wow!  Did you see how close I came!"
She didn't come anywhere near close!

Sarah's turn again...

...and then the look of "Oh No!  It splashed everywhere...including my eyes!"

And I have to get one shot in of Caleb shooting.  We've had the hoop up since Sunday and neither kid has yet to make a basket.  The rule is the have to stay sitting on their little behinds or the ball gets taken away.  But they have hope!  They know one day they will make it!

And every night ends the same with Bible time.  We alternate between "Daddy's Bible" and "Caleb's Bible" (a children's story Bible).   A little over a year ago (or longer...), we were challenged at church to spend time each day reading the Word of God.  We already knew we should have been doing that, but we were especially  challenged by that COW (Cchallenge Of the Week) and we created "Bible time" before bed.  We've read as a family every night since.
